God’s Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question-Why We Suffer, by Bart D. Ehrman

  1. I recently finished this book about the Biblical explanations for suffering:

    – Punishment from God (largely the position of the Hebrew prophets)

    – Free will (eg, Genesis’s forbidden fruit)

    – Redemption (eg, the Joseph story, the Exodus)

    – Evil forces, the devil etc

    – A test (as in Job)

    – Life is just that way, transient, ephemeral, sometimes painful, sometimes pleasurable, and then you die (Ecclesiastes)

The author, rightfully I think, finds the first five very unsatisfying.

    Thoughts?
